Common Flu or influenza may
be caused due to infection by Type A or Type B viruses which
cause respiratory problems, fever, chill aches and pain and
also cough and sore throat to the person infected with influenza
viruses. The infection becomes dangerous if neglected at the
beginning.
The influenza virus attack becomes severe
and can result into life threatening Pneumonia. Some times
more ailments are caused due to secondary bacterial infection.
The disease is very easy to spread, as the
virus from the infected person can attack the person next
to him or her. In this manner the whole group of persons may
be infected by the virus.
But why we do not see that every one in the
community is attacked by the virus?
The answer to this may be the following
reasons:
The body resistance against virus attack
is different for different persons. May be some persons in
the community have greater resistance power to be immune against
the virus attack. Some of the persons may have taken some
preventive measures which can check the virus attack. And
so on.
Let us now discuss about the available medicinal
treatment of both the Type A and Type B viruses.
Amantadine
and Rimantadine antiviral medicines have been found to be
suitable for treatment of Type A virus attack. However, these
medicines are not suitable for other kinds of virus infection
or for other disease particularly these medicines are ineffective
for treatment against the infection from bird
flu or avian influenza virus.
The anti viral medicine Relenza
is very much effective for treatment and prevention from infection
by both Type A and Type B of Influenza. This medicine is also
found to be effective against infection by bird flu virus.
But the problem is that the medicine is not available in bulk
quantities which may be required in the event of a community
outbreak of this kind of virus infection. In fact this problem
has shaken different parts of the world in recent years.
Why are you so much scared about
the infection from bird flu virus?
Birds are also susceptible to flu virus infection
and when they are attacked by the virus it is called bird
flu or avian influenza. As the disease can quickly spread
form one bird to the whole lot, immediate quarantining of
the healthy birds and culling of all the infected birds are
necessary, because the disease may attack the humans who come
in close contacts of the infected birds.
Studies have proved that when the bird flu
virus enters human body, it may change its form and become
fatal to humans. Studies also predict that a new mutated virus
may come up which will be resistant to anti viral medicines.
In fact spread of bird flu virus in different parts of the
world for the last three to four years not only resulted in
culling and quarantining of millions of chickens but also
caused human deaths in far eastern countries.
All these things have generated the present
media noise about the spread of bird flu virus to different
parts of the world and there is a frantic search for a suitable
medicine to fight bird flu virus infection particularly to
save the human population.
We have pointed earlier that normal medicines
like amantadine or rimantadine are not effective for treatment
of infection due to bird flu virus. The only suitable medicine
for treatment and prevention from the infection by bird flu
virus is Oseltamivir Phosphate which is the medical name of
Tamiflu.
The anti viral drug Tamiflu is suitable for
treatment of infection by Types A and B Influenza virus. Tamiflu
prevents new viruses from emerging from infected cells. This
ultimately checks spreading of the virus form one to the other.
However, higher dosage and longer period
of treatment will be required for treatment of person infected
with Avian Influenza virus.
