In this age of highly competitive
work culture and fast money, stress levels are at its peak
with every individual trying to outperform and thus getting
bogged down by their own tension monster. Being anxious at
some point of time under stressful circumstances is a part
of human behavior. But excessive anxiety for a prolonged period
of time may be termed as anxiety
disorder.
Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness
related to the fear of the unknown and the unfolding future
of which the individual is insecure about, or can be an outcome
of depression. Anxiety
is caused by an increase in stress hormones - adrenalin, released
by the brain. When one has an anxiety attack the adrenalin
level in the body reaches an all time high thus making the
heart, lungs and other body parts work faster than normal
and the person involved is unable to think and decide for
himself leading to anxiety and panic attacks.
Panic disorder or attacks may
be summarized as a human response triggered by a sudden bout
of anxiety when subjected to a difficult or unprecedented
situation. Panic attacks are often unpredictable, very episodic
and are often seen as recurring attacks of severe anxiety
which lasts for a short span of a few seconds or minutes in
rare cases.
Anxiety relief cannot be difficult
proposition and to deal with this stress in our life is the
challenge. A few tips on little change in our mental, physical
and everyday lifestyle:
- Meditation and breathing exercises
- Organize your priority tasks and deal with them first
- Keep away from alcohol, caffeine, and artificial stimulants
- Counseling sessions for managing stress and anxiety
- Medications prescribed by your physician.
Medical practitioners suggest
prescription drugs of the group Benzodiazapine as the last
resort for anxiety relief. They are Amitriptyline, Buspirone,
Clonazepam, Diazepam
and Lorazepam to name a
few. They are mostly antidepressants, which induce a state
of parasympathetic mode in the body. Amongst them the most
widely used is Amitriptyline which is available in the brand
name Elavil and Endep. A version of its Generic drugs is also
available.
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic
anti-depressant prescribed to control acute anxiety disorders
in patients with insomnia, restlessness and nervousness. It
is also used for treating fibromyalgia and symptoms related
to chronic pain. Amitriptyline
may be administered in depressive illness of psychotic or
endogenous nature which are more alleviated than other depressive
states and in selected patients with neurotic depression.
It is advisable to buy Amitriptyline only by medical prescription
and caution should be taken against drug interaction with
MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibiting drugs and in patients with
liver dysfunction as Amitriptyline is metabolized in the liver.
Medication can be very useful
in treating anxiety disorders and is often used in combination
with other forms of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral
therapy but it is not a solution. The mantra to keep off anxiety
is to relax, de-stress and an organized lifestyle.
