A recent study conducted found out that diabetes-related erectile dysfunction (ED) is caused by a defect in the nitric oxide mechanism in a part of the brain called the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). The study brings to light new information about the association between diabetes and erectile dysfunction.

The PVN is present in the hypothalamus and it plays vital role in penis erection and in sexual behavior. Sexual dysfunction is generally found in diabetes patients.

Researchers of University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, who took part in the study said the information that they got, would help in improving the treatments available for diabetes patients with erectile dysfunction.

The experiments were done on rats and it was concluded that erectile dysfunction in diabetes is due to a defect in the nitric oxide mechanisms within the PVN. The defect is the loss in the synthetic enzyme for the production of nitric oxide within the neurons of the PVN.

If the production of this synthetic enzyme is restored then it may benefit diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction.

This news release is entirely a personal opinion. It should not be misconstrued as a medical advice.
