Doxycycline
Generic Name: Doxycycline
Brand Name: Periostat
Doxycycline is used to cure bacterial infections, which includes
pneumonia & other critical respiratory tract infections;
lyme disease; acne; infections of skin, genital, and urinary
systems; and anthrax (after inhalational exposure). It is also
used to prevent malaria. Doxycycline is in a class of medications
called tetracycline antibiotics. It works by preventing the
growth and spread of bacteria.
How Is It Used?
The treatment duration for the Doxycycline periodontal system
is 7 days after your dentist inserts it. If the system becomes
loose or falls out before the 7 days are up, check with your
dentist very soon. Doxycycline periodontal system does not have
to be removed by the dentist; it will automatically get dissolve.
The dental dressing/adhesive that holds the system in place
may fall out naturally.
Ideal Dosing-
The dosage of doxycycline periodontal system varies from patient
to patients. Following information includes only the average
doses of doxycycline periodontal system.

Adults-Doxycycline periodontal system is
placed by your dentist into one or more deep gum pockets next
to your teeth. A dental dressing or adhesive will be placed
on top to help keep the system in place. The treatment may
be repeated four months later.

Infants and children up to 9 years of
age-Use is not recommended. Tetracycline, such as Doxycycline,
can permanently discolor teeth.

Children 8 years of age and older-Use
and dose must be determined by your dentist.
Are There Possible Side Effects?
Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do
occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your dentist or doctor as soon as possible if any
of the following side effects occur:

Less common
o High blood pressure; looseness of tooth ; tooth or gum pain
(severe or continuing)
However, check with your dentist or doctor if any of the following
side effects continue or are bothersome:
More common
o Common cold-like symptoms; gum discomfort, pain, or soreness;
headache; pressure sensitivity of tooth; toothache

Less common
o Abdominal bloating and/or stomach or pelvic pain; cough;
diarrhea; gum redness; indigestion, upset stomach, or stomachache
; influenza-like symptoms; mouth pain or soreness; muscle
aches; sensitivity of tooth to heat or cold; shortness of
breath; sleeplessness; sore throat; stuffy head, postnasal
drip, or nasal congestion
Other side effects not listed above may also occur in some
patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your
dentist or doctor.
What particular precautions should I follow?
Doxycycline may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight
than it is normally. Exposure to sunlight, even for brief periods
of time, may cause a skin rash, itching, redness or other discoloration
of the skin, or severe sunburn. For a period of 7 days after
receiving Doxycycline periodontal system:

Try to stay away of direct sunlight.

Wear protective clothing, including a
hat. Also, wear sunglasses.

Apply a sun block product that has a skin
protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Some patients may
require a product with a higher SPF number, especially if
they have a fair complexion. If you have any questions about
this, check with your health care professional.

Apply a sun block lipstick that has an
SPF of at least 15 to protect your lips.

Do not use a sunlamp or tanning bed or
booth.
What about Interactions with Other Drugs?
It is recommended that doxycycline not be taken at the same
time as aluminum-, magnesium-, or calcium- based antacids. These
medications bind doxycycline in the intestine. In the same way,
doxycycline should not be taken with minerals (such as calcium
or iron), with bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol).
In case of emergency/overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center.
If the victim has collapsed or not breathing, call local emergency
services at 911.
What If I Miss A Dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is
near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume
your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch
up.
How Should It Be Stored?
It should be kept below 30°C (86°F). The suspension
should be refrigerated and shaken prior to each use.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist/doctor
