Fexofenadine
Generic Name: Fexofenadine
Brand Name: Allegra
It is used for relieving severe fever & allergy symptoms,
including runny nose; sneezing; with redness in eyes including
itchy & tearing eyes. Fexofenadine is also used to treat
symptoms of hives, which also includes itchiness and rashing.
Fexofenadine comes in the class of medications known as antihistamines.
It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that
causes allergic symptoms. It may cause less drowsiness than
other antihistamines.
How Is It Used?
Fexofenadine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually
taken once or twice a day. Follow the directions on your prescription
label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain
any part you do not understand. Use fexofenadine exactly as
directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often
than prescribed by your doctor.
Are There Possible Side Effects?
Use of fexofenadine may cause side effects. Do tell your doctor
if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away soon:
Fexofenadine may cause other side effects. Call your doctor
if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication
immediately.
What particular precautions should I follow?
Before taking fexofenadine,

Do tell your doctor/pharmacist if you
are allergic to fexofenadine or any other medications.

Do tell your doctor/pharmacist what prescription
and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements,
and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention either
of the following: erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, and Erythrocin)
and ketoconazole (Nizoral).

If you are taking antacids (Maalox, Mylanta),
take them a few hours before or after fexofenadine.

Do tell your doctor/pharmacist if you
have or have ever had kidney disease.

Remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness
caused by this medication.
What about Interactions with Other Drugs?
In controlled clinical studies there were no interactions with
other drugs that significantly affected the safety or effectiveness
of fexofenadine.
In case of emergency/overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center.
If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local
emergency services at 911.

What If I Miss A Dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if
it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and
continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double
dose to make up for a missed one.
How Should It Be Stored?
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed,
and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and
away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
