It is used to treat excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) time & difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during scheduled sleeping hours in people who work at night or in shifts). It is to be taken by mouth. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the area of the brain that controls sleep and wakefulness.

How Is It Used?
Provigil (Modafinil) usually is taken at a dose of 200 or 400 mg daily. Modafinil can be taken with or without food. Take this medicine as directed by your doctor/pharmacist. Don't take more of it, don't take it more often, and avoid take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.

Are There Possible Side Effects?
Common side effects of modafinil in clinical trials include headache, upper respiratory tract infection, nausea, nervousness, insomnia & anxiety. These each occur in more than 7% of patients.

What particular precautions should I follow?
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary.

What about Interactions with Other Drugs?
Modafinil can decrease or increase the role of enzymes in the liver that metabolize other drugs. This can lead in decreased levels of some drugs that reduce their effectiveness and increased levels of other drugs that lead to their toxicity. The treatment should be carefully monitored if taken with any of these drugs.

In case of emergency/overdose
In case of overdose, call your nearest local poison control. If the victim has collapsed or not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Symptoms of overdose may include:
Anxiety; headache; nausea; nervousness; trouble in sleeping.

What If I Miss A Dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

How Should It Be Stored?
Modafinil should be stored at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F).
