Having received inadequate sales in Europe, Sanofi-Aventis,
maker of the qualified weight loss pill Acomplia,
blamed far-flung European denial to insurance imbursement behind
staggering application of the drug. Acomplia garnered a disappointing
sale of total 15 million Euros in the first three months of 2007,
announced the drug maker on May 4th.
Since its European introduction in last June, Over 130,000 obese and overweight utilized the drug to avail remarkable benefits out of it, claimed Sanofi. But as per the perception of analysts, the disappointing figures showed that many actually have used the drug as sample but discontinued the usage thereafter.
Some largest European markets administered by government authorities either have refused to reimburse the amount paid by acomplia users or have narrowed down the reimbursement only to obese patients with unrestrained type2 diabetes.
"The company anticipated that nearly 40 percent
users are putting more burden on own pockets to buy Acomplia" said
Sanofi executive vice president Hanspeter Spek in a meeting with
analysts.
The regulatory agency is likely to take a final
decision on whether to endorse rimonabant before July end.
