Generic drugs posing a big threat to branded ones

Patents of some of the most popular branded drugs are going to expire soon thus opening an array of opportunity for generic drug makers to copy those branded drugs and churn huge amount of money. The situation is going to provide a tough competition to pharma giants like Pfizer and Merck & Co. as generic drug companies will try to make huge profit by producing generic Viagra, generic Zoloft and other generic versions of popular drugs.

To overcome this situation, some of the big pharmacy names such as Merck & Co is laying off its employees and shuttering down manufacturing sites to save $4 billion through 2010. The company is also trying to acquire another company to build its product pipeline for facing the competition of generic drug manufacturers.
