Pfizer won a battle against Generic Drug manufacturers

23 November, 2005

Ranbaxy, India's prominent generic drugmaker lost a battle against Pfizer Laboratories Inc. regarding patent protection. Ranbaxy, the maker of erectile dysfunction (ED) generic drug Caverta has lost the opportunity of selling a generic version of Pfizer's high blood pressure treatment, Accupril. The court also halted Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., a generic drug manufacturer from marketing a generic version of the drug.

The patent infringement case was filed by Pfizer in March, 2005 against the two generic drugmakers. Accupril, which had sales of $665 million last year, has patent exclusivity until 2007. The decision marks the second win for Pfizer against generic drug maker Ranbaxy within a month but Ranbaxy intends to vigorously challenge infringement, validity and enforceability of the patent in further proceedings before the district court.
