Mumps is an acute viral disease caused by a myxo
virus that is eventually spread from person to person by acts such
as coughing, sneezing and even kissing as they spread through air.
It can also result in infertility in human beings. Its symptoms
appear in between 12-25 days. Mumps can destroy the nervous system
in turn affecting the brain.
The ailment could lead to other opportunistic diseases
such as deafness, madness and Meningitis leading to even death.
It can race down and cause the swelling of both testicles and ovaries
in males and females respectively which may result into infertility.
Despite its uniqueness, mumps can be prevented
through immunization. There is a vaccine that protects against mumps
only, but MMR vaccine which works against mumps, Measles and Rubella
diseases are shots of two doses given to children in the ages between
12 - 15 months before the first birth day, then in between the years
4 - 6 of age.
It is advisable that even adults above the age
of 18 and have not had Mumps before or the vaccine to also get MMR
vaccine to prevent themselves from mumps.
