New
Generic drugs for treating HIV patients in India
23 September, 2006
Gilead life sciences, in a move to soften controversies
for not doing anything to help people infected with HIV in poor
countries, has agreed to allow eight Indian firms to produce low
-cost copies of its most popular HIV drugs. Under this new generic
licensing agreement, Indian companies can sell generic versions
of Gilead’s drug ‘Viread’, also called ‘Tenofovir’,
in India and in 94 low income nations.
India tops the list of nations with largest number
of HIV infections. A report says that India’s GDP will loose
around a percent because of this AIDS epidemic. Many analysts believe
that allowing Indian companies to make generic versions of ‘Viread’
will make this drug a lot cheaper, making it more affordable to
HIV patients living in poor countries.
