Tramadol/Acetaminophen

Generic Name: Tramadol/Acetaminophen
Brand Name: Ultracet

This combination medication is used to treat acute pain. It is only recommended for short-term use (5 days or less). An opioid analgesic and acetaminophen used together may provide better pain relief than either medicine used alone.

How Is It Used?

Take this medication by mouth as directed by doctor or normally every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Are There Possible Side Effects?
It may shows side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away.

  • nervousness or anxiety
  • agitation
  • increased muscle tightness
  • drowsiness
  • blurred vision
  • heartburn or indigestion
  • upset stomach
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • itching
  • dizziness

What particular precautions should I follow?

  • First of all tell your doctor/ pharmacist that you are allergic to tramadol or other narcotic pain medications (if any).
  • Do tell your doctor about your seizures, injuries, infection in your brain or nervous system, diabetes, breathing problems & diseases. Any drinking habit or use of prescription medications should be informed.
  • About Pregnancy or surgery done in past should be immediately informed before to use of tramadol.
  • Tramadol may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up from a lying position. To get out of this, get out of bed slowly, resting your feet on the floor for a couple of minutes before standing up.

What about Interactions with Other Drugs?

Tramadol can cause to impair thinking and the physical abilities required for driving. It should be avoided in patients intoxicated with alcohol, hypnotics, and narcotics. Large doses of tramadol with alcohol/anesthetic agents can impair breathing. Tramadol can increase the risk of seizure in epileptic patients, especially with simultaneous use of tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil. No dosage adjustment or reduction is necessary in healthy elderly patients 65-75 years of age. Patients over the age of 70 years, and those with liver & kidney dysfunction may need lower dosages.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your nearest local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • vomiting
  • decreased size of the pupil
  • difficulty breathing
  • extreme drowsiness
  • unconsciousness
  • coma
  • seizure
  • heart attack

What If I Miss A Dose?

You can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not ever take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How Should It Be Stored?

Store at room temperature, sealed container
